Martin Hadlow, Secretary-General

Previously, Martin Hadlow was an Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, where he was also Foundation Director of the School's Centre for Communication and Social Change and, in 2010, Convenor of the global UN World Press Freedom Day conference. Prior to joining the university, he was a senior member of the UNESCO Secretariat, including as Director of UNESCO's Division of Freedom of Expression, Democracy and Peace, and acting Director of the Bureau of Public Information at UNESCO HQ in Paris. He also established UNESCO's first field offices in the independent Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union and in Kabul, Afghanistan. He previously headed UNESCO's regional communication advisory offices in Malaysia and Jordan, and he established temporary offices in Iraq and Sri Lanka. Martin Hadlow has a professional background in journalism and program production, has published widely and has worked in the media and communications field as a trainer and in project implementation in over 45 countries, especially in Asia and the Pacific.

Cherian George, a Singaporean writer and academic, is an Associate Professor at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University. He serves as the Director of the Temasek Foundation - NTU Asia Journalism Fellowship. He is also an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Policy Studies at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore.

His main research interest is in media and politics, including the political economy of journalism, censorship and alternative media. He is the author of three books: Singapore: The Air-Conditioned Nation (Landmark, 2000); Contentious Journalism and the Internet: Towards Democratic Discourse in Malaysia and Singapore (National University of Singapore Press and University of Washington Press, 2006); and Freedom From The Press: Journalism and State Power in Singapore (National University of Singapore Press, 2012). His journal articles include "Consolidating Authoritarian Rule: Calibrated Coercion in Singapore" in The Pacific Review and "Media in Malaysia: Zone of Contention" in Democratization, both published in 2007. In 2010, he was a recipient of a Nanyang Award, the university's highest honour for teaching excellence.

He received his Ph.D. in Communication from Stanford University.
He has a Masters from Columbia University’s School of Journalism and a B.A. in Social and Political Sciences from Cambridge University.

Rachel Khan is also a professor of Journalism at the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines-Diliman, where she served as its chair from 2006-2009.She has a M.S.Journalism from the Columbia University, New York under the Fulbright program and a B.S. Economics from the University of the Philippines Diliman. Other affiliations include the Fulbright Alumni Association, the Philippine Studies Association of the Philippines (PSAP) and the Internet Society (IIS).

Ivy is the Office Manager and Executive Secretary to the Secretary-General and handles AMIC's administration. She has degree in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of the East,Philippines.

Ms. Angie Chew, Publication Executive

Angie Chew handles publications and subscription for Media Asia, a quarterly journal. She is also the editor for the bi-monthly Asian Media and Communication Bulletin (AMCB). She is a graduate in Communication Studies from Monash University, Australia.



Mr. Kranthi Kiran,

Kranthi is the Webmaster for AMIC and he also takes care of all IT related matters including database management.



Ms. Sangeetha Madasamy,
Research Assistant

Sangeetha is a Research Assistant at AMIC, and handles the annual conference and other project initiatives. She has a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
