Current Projects

1) Alternative Media Portal
AMIC's Alternative Media portal (www.amicaltmedia.net) is an on-going project, which gradually increases its database and news archives.

2) "Asian Voices" Radio Programme
This programme continues to be produced on a monthly basis based on various issues in the Asian context such as, “Right to Information”, “Role and Nature of Community Radio in Asia”, “Alternative Media in Southeast Asia”, “Utilizing Media to Promote Peace”, and many more. Currently, this programme is downloaded and broadcast by at least eight radio stations in the region.

3) Young Asian Reporters (YAR) (http://www.amic.org.sg/YAR/)
This is a youth initiative project initiated by AMIC as a follow-up of the 2nd ASEAN Media Forum held in Bangkok in 2010. This network provides a platform for youths to share stories (features/audio/video/photographs) on an international platform and improve their journalistic skills. All stories are given feedback by media experts. YAR is partnering with NAM News Network coordinated by Malaysia's Bernama News Agency. In addition it is also partnering with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

4) Public Service Broadcasting in Asia
This is an unfounded research project looking at public service broadcasting in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia and Singapore. In each of the countries, local academics are doing it as part of their research portfolio. The reports will be compiled into a book by AMIC.

5) Impact of New Anti-Terror Laws on Media Freedom
AMIC is coordinating the project while working with a number of researchers in Europe and Asia to produce a comparative study. The European study will be undertaken by Dr Venkat Iyer, a member of the Northern Ireland Law Commission and a senior lecturer at the School of Law, University of Ulster. The Asian study is being coordinated by Dr Kalinga Seneviratne, Head of Research and Capacity Building of AMIC in Singapore. He is writing the segments in association with Dr Javed Nazir, a former newspaper editor and academic from Pakistan. The Asian study will focus on Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines along with an overview of the regional situation. AMIC will publish the monologue in association with the EU Centre in Singapore (due to be launched in September 2011) which will include the two studies on Europe and Asia, but there will be no concluding chapter nor recommendations because the idea is to offer a comparative study and not to make any conclusions. That will be left to the readers and academic users of the publication to discuss in classrooms and seminars.

6) A Survey of Information Literacy Teachers in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh
The project is to conduct surveys of a sample of educators in the four countries, namely India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh in partnership with teacher training institutes in each of these countries.  One researcher will be commissioned for each of the four countries, who will then administer the designed survey among the sample in consultation with the partner teacher training institute.  The survey process will be overseen by AMIC.  The collected data will be analysed, edited and compiled into a report using SPSS.
