SELAMAT DATANG

Welcome to Indonesia! That’s the call from Universitas Gadjah Mada, hosts for this year’s AMIC international conference in Yogyakarta.

Under the guidance of UGM Rector, Professor Pratikno, the conference team from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences has worked strenuously to ensure that every aspect of the AMIC conference will proceed smoothly and effortlessly.

UGM conference team leader, Dr. Hermin Indah Wahyuni, has assured participants that they will enjoy a truly rich intellectual and cultural experience over the four days of the conference.

AMIC conference co-ordinator, Associate Professor Rachel Khan, has recently returned from a visit to Yogyakarta and is impressed with arrangements.

"The hotel venue is splendid and all other conference planning is well advanced", she said. "The opening and closing ceremonies will be held in the Amarta Ballroom, with parallel sessions in rooms close to each other elsewhere in the hotel".

Logistical information has now been forwarded to all conference delegates and AMIC members. It gives useful airport arrival and departure details, as well as visa advice, taxi travel, hotel arrangements and conference matters. The information letter is available here.

MASTERCLASS PLANNED FOR YOGYAKARTA CONFERENCE

Development communication students and researchers are in for a feast at AMIC’s 2013 conference in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Within the overall context of this year’s conference theme, Transformational Communication and the New Asia, the prestigious UNESCO Emeritus Dialogue in Yogyakarta will explore how development communication fits the realities of a changing Asia. Does it still have a role?

Five development communication experts, each with a lifetime of specialist knowledge in the field, will provide a spirited and challenging debate on the subject, especially highlighting the changes brought about by the inroads made into rural parts of Asia by new technologies. Have mobile phones and social media impacted on the way in which communities participate in their own development? What of ‘traditional’ development communication processes and media tools? Do they still have a place?

The UNESCO Emeritus Dialogue will feature Indonesian development communication expert Professor Alwi Dahlan, Professor John Lent, a renowned scholar on Asia from the USA, publisher and former IDRC communication specialist, Chin Saik Yoon from Malaysia, former AMIC Asian Communication Awardee, Professor Crispin Maslog of the Philippines, and AMIC Board Member Professor Binod Agrawal from India. The session will be chaired by academic and media specialist, Arun Mahizhnan, of Singapore’s Institute of Policy Studies.

RADIOASIA 2013 REGISTRATION UNDERWAY!

Registration is now open for the RadioAsia 2013 conference in Hanoi, Vietnam.

This year’s conference theme looks at social media and the way it influences radio broadcasting. What are the challenges of the future? How can ‘traditional’ radio broadcasting harness the power of the new digital on-line technologies?

Already, a range of influential radio broadcasting experts and managers have agreed to speak at RadioAsia 2013.  Subjects for discussion include community radio and the new media, advertising and audience measurement, radio and emergency situations and a panel discussion focusing on key areas for radio in the new era.

Conference delegates can now register on-line for the conference at www.radioasia.org.  Full hotel booking details are also available on the web-site, as is a draft of the conference programme.

The RadioAsia2013 conference, jointly organised by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) will be held in Hanoi from 29 to 31 July 2013. The host organisation is ABU member, the Voice of Vietnam.

UGM RECTOR MEETS AMIC

1

In preparation for this year's annual conference, AMIC Secretary-General, Martin Hadlow recently met with UGM Rector, Professor Pratikno, at his office in Yogyakarta.

Prof. Pratikno noted that the conference theme, Transformational Communication and the New Asia was a concept that Indonesians could very much relate to. As a matter of fact, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's most popular vision is, perhaps, the country's soft power diplomacy, which he presented before a UN forum. That is, soft power that focuses more on bringing peace through different approaches such as culture, education and communication.

Dr. Hadlow also met with Dean Dr. Erwan Agus Purwanto of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, and with the faculty members of the Department of Communication, led by former Dean Dr. Hermin Wahyuni, the UGM coordinator for the conference.

The theme of this year's annual AMIC conference seeks to highlight the role of communication and the media in bringing about a 'New Asia', that is, an Asia that is slowly transforming into a 'soft power' as Europe and North America seem to continue their decline.

With this economic growth comes 'soft power', seen in the growing global influence of Asian culture, symbolized by, for example, the rising Bollywood and Hong Kong genre in films, Japanese anime and Korean pop music. It is also seen in the Asian presence in various communication channels.

Most Asian nations have their own radio and television networks and have reduced their reliance on Western-oriented international news agencies for their world news content. And their social and mobile media presence is overwhelming. To illustrate, the Internet Worldstats.com reports that Chinese is the second most used language on the Internet (after English). Japanese rated fourth, and Korean was tenth.
