| | The Asian Communication Handbook (ACH) is a guide to knowledge about communication resources in Asia. ACH 2003 is the fourth in the series. It will feature latest updates on the communication scene from Asia. The handbook will also feature narrative descriptions on selected topics on communication and media. Each country section will have a comprehensive overview of the contemporary communication scene in that country along vital demographic, communication and media related information from 17 countries. The book is part of a co-operative project between AMIC, NTU-SCI and KAF. The ACH 2003 was published in December 2003. |

 | A Silent Crisis: Portrayal of Disabled Persons in Television, Radio and Newspaper in Asia |
| | In many countries, journalists are not trained to handle disability issues. Consequently, the media use particular types of image, which may contribute to the possibility of creating certain prejudices and misunderstandings in the minds of the reader. AMIC launched a project to study how newspaper and Televisions portray disability issues. The study was carried out in three Asian studies namely, China, India and Japan. The reports based on the findings of the study were published in May 2002. |

 | Sharing of Information about Asia with the West |
| | This is a seven countries study commenced in 2000. The seven countries included in the study are Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Philippines and Thailand. The objective of this study was to identify issues relevant to Asian countries that are not adequately covered in the Western media, the reasons for this and ways and means of improving media coverage of these wants in the West. A post research conference was held to disseminate the research findings in Singapore from 30 Jan to 1 Feb 2001. The Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) of Japan supported the study. A book entitled ‘Under Asian Eyes’ which is based on the reports from the seven countries was published in May 2002. |

| | A research/publication project commissioned by Unesco to provide information on core concepts of PSB to media professionals, decision makers, students and the general public. |

 | Free Expression and Development in Asia |
| | The connection between freedom of expression and socio-economic development is the subject of this research which began in mid-2003. Asian scholars and media practitioners from 6 Asian countries are involved in the project. Based on the finding of the research study, they will recommend policy guidelines for consideration by development agencies, including national governments and civil society organizations.
This project entails a book publication. Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung is funding this project. Dr. S. Venkatraman, AMIC consultant, served as project coordinator and book editor. |

 | Asian Conference on Cultural Rights in a Global World |
| | AMIC held an Asian Conference to discuss the implication of increasing globalisation on cultural rights in Singapore from September 18th to 20th, 2001. The conference discussed issues related to cultural autonomy in a globalised communication environment. The discussions have enabled searches for new policies that may ensure a more equitable participation of poorer countries in defending their cultural rights. Special emphasis was on the implications of globalisation for the cultural survival of smaller and weaker developing countries in Asia. The conference papers were published as a book in 2002. |
